Something nameless ought to be harder to find.[break][break]
But Nomi knows this bar, because Parker knows this bar. Nomi's tended to the cuts and scrapes and cracked knuckles, pressing ice to her girlfriend's black eye with tender fingers. She doesn't like the fighting, but she knows Parker needs it. Pent-up anger, restless energy, and a competitive spirit: these are core traits that Nomi wouldn't trade, because without them, Parker wouldn't be Parker.[break][break]
She teleports in after hours, appearing right next to the recently locked door in a flash of crystalline energy. She doesn't want to scare him, but she does want to get his attention.[break][break]
Odd how they look like they could be siblings now, what with the matching shocks of blue hair.[break][break]
"Hi King," she greets, and though her tone is pleasant, her eyes are a distant iceberg of red resistance.[break][break]

Lucario reacts to the flare of energy first. A burst of EXTREMESPEED has the jackal flying across the cement floor, fist raised and coated with the beginnings of an AURA SPHERE, before recollection hits half-a-dozen paces away.

A gust of wind sweeps across Naomi Sato at the sudden break of speed. Xen greets the avatar with a single annoyed cuff.

"Almost found yerself a stain on the wall," King says with a raised brow and none too happy himself.

The sudden breeze blows back her hair, but the Visionary does not flinch. She stands her ground as the Lucario skids to a halt before her, its chagrined expression mirroring the way KING WAYLAND scoffs at her unceremonious arrival.[break][break]
"I don't have time for warnings," she tells him, and it is not quite an apology, not quite an explanation. It is, however, a testament to how accustomed she has grown to the prospect of being attacked, that she does not seem at all rattled by his casual observation of her near-annihilation.[break][break]
She glides over to the bar, and hops up on a barstool, feet dangling almost a foot off the ground. A part of her - the part that remembers Isaac Merlo's kindness, in another lifetime - hopes he will offer her a drink.[break][break]

"Sure, take a seat." The bar of course was shut down, as it was closing time, but something told him Nomi didn't quite mind.

He grabs a bottle of something cheap—vodka, if the clear liquid was any clue—and slides the entire thing her way.

"Well, go on, speak."

She extends her senses, searching for signs of the Councilwoman. The rafters are full of beady eyes, peering down at her from their nests. Kallistatus floats upwards, until it is level with a shiny Dragonaire coiled between wooden beams, his belly drooping down like a living decorative garland. The Unown stares at him enigmatically, and does not mind when the dragon stares back.[break][break]
Not here, confirms the Collective. She'd checked before coming, of course, but the certainty is a relief.[break][break]
"A member of the League's council wants me dead," she begins, as hands that haven't stopped trembling since the chasm, since the hospital, reach for the bottle. "I need to understand how close yours is to feeling the same."[break][break]

King pushes air through his nostril, laughing barely contained by an apathetic mood.

"No shit?" He couldn't name a single other person aside from freya morningstar and FERNANDO SILPH, but he could see why they would want her dead.

"Yer an avatar aren't ye? Or whatever the hell they call ya'll." He was so out of touch. "Does it surprise ye ta know they want ye dead, bein' their enemy 'n all?"

But she didn't want the obvious thrown at her. As powerful as Nomi was, she was naive. But, that was Parker's problem.

"Couldn't tell ye though ta be honest. She listened ta ya back in the Crater didn't she? Have ye pissed 'er off since?"

She takes a swig, and it's just awful. Parker likes this stuff all glitzed up with fruit and sugar, but Nomi isn't sure anything could hide this brand's ethanol-forward flavor profile.[break][break]
His laughter isn't mockery so much as incredulous disbelief. But he misunderstands, and that's both expected and utterly exhausting. She swings her feet in agitation.[break][break]
"It's not because I'm an Avatar," she explains. "Sure, people fear Avatars. But this recent development has surfaced because Councilwoman PENELOPE LIVY is so blinded by her hatred of Rocket, she refuses to accept the wisdom in a temporary alliance against a far greater threat."[break][break]
She sucks in a breath through her teeth.[break][break]
"But Freya isn't like her. At least, I don't think she is. She might hate Rocket as an entity, but she believes in granting second chances, for individuals. She believes in redemption."[break][break]
She looks him up and down, as if seeing him for the very first time.[break][break]
"But Livy herself is an Avatar too, one with powers far more dangerous than mine. She can influence the emotions of those around her, and not for the better. I haven't pissed Freya off, any more or less than I might already have simply by complicating her life, but do you have any sense of how close she is with the other Councilwoman?"

Seeing as his words had little positive effect, King opts in for listening.

He was a bar owner and bartender—listening was all but a requirement in this profession. Only when he's well and truly satisfied she's said her piece, does he drum up a response of his own.

This piece was important to her, and she was in-turn important to parker jones, so he gives it the respect it's due. At least, a measure of it.

"Is that why ye came ta me than? Knowin' she gave me a second chance?" King didn't think she was intentionally manipulative, but subconsciously? Anything was possible.

"Ta answer yer question though—no, I don't. As ye can imagine we don't talk much shop. It's a sore subject. But, she doesn't complain about the woman, if that's any consolation."

The pads of his fingers rub mindlessly against the glass's surface.

"But if she didn't try ta kill ya in that crater, she won't do it outright now."

Love manipulates. There is no way around it, no avoiding it. Her love for parker jones is the opening sentence, his love for freya morningstar the ending paragraph. Together, they will weave a story soaked in blood and sorrow, as inevitable as the dawn.[break][break]
"Yes," she answers truthfully. That was indeed why she had come. "But also, because Parker trusts you."[break][break]
Precious few could be trusted these days.[break][break]
He tries to assuage her fears, and her heart beats louder, her mouth drying up with every word. She reaches again for the alcohol, but her hand hovers over the bottle. The scales are tipping: but in which direction? She does not know.[break][break]
"She will if someone convinces her to," Nomi whispers. "But there's only one person she will listen to above the rest."[break][break]
That isn't necessarily true, she knows. But the other is indisposed. Nomi cannot ask more of her, not now. Maybe not ever.[break][break]
The plea comes easily, but it burns the back of her throat - harsher than the cheap Vodka.[break][break]
"Please, King. Livy almost killed Parker. I'll do everything in my power to keep you and your family safe, but I need to know Freya won't come for us too."

King extracts himself from his position at the bar and instead leans back against the counter behind him, arms crossed.

She was manipulating him, though he still wasn't sure if it really was for Parker's benefit, or her own.

"Ye have ta know I don't appreciate ye attemptin' ta use my relationship ta get what ye want." His stare is pointed and unwavering, blue orbs burning with conviction. "But 'cus I assume ye know that then I'm ta assume this is the type of thing that's worth swallowin' yer pride fer."

He truly hadn't understood what that meant until he became a father.

"She won't come fer ye if ye haven't deserved it. I don't know this Livy yer mentionin'—I'm assumin' based off context 'n all that she's this other Councilwoman—but Freya's not nearly as vengeful. If she was, Sootopolis would be in flames—I'm sure ye know how much she detests it bein' under ya'lls control."

She is swallowing pride, yes. She's choking on regret. She can hardly breath for lack of certainty.[break][break]
"This isn't how I want to operate," she tells him truthfully. "What I want is for us to be friends."[break][break]
He and Parker already were, in a sense. But they don't live in a world where their families can be anything more than underground allies: not while Nomi remains loyal to Rocket, and not while King dances the line between factions all too delicately. There's a timeline, somewhere - perhaps Father Winter could have taken her there instead - where she and freya morningstar are colleagues, Nomi's PhD having led her to a Head Scientist position within the League government. She can touch that reality with a steadier hand than she can stomach the version of herself that had followed Holo from the very beginning.[break][break]
But there is no sense dwelling on alternate realities, when this is the world she's vowed to protect.[break][break]
"Sootopolis is - was - her home," Nomi confirms. She knows the history, but not the layers of hurt. She lost a family once, but not a legacy. "She wants it back, but not with blood."[break][break]
Kallistatus and the shiny Dragonaire are having some sort of conversation, a silent exchange between ancients.[break][break]
"It's my home now, too." She thinks of their house, where Parker is now, where Maisey's surely snoring on her back in the bed. "Maybe there's a future where we can live there together."[break][break]
A sad smile, a candle-wick of hope.[break][break]
"As, you know. Neighbors."

She isn't even entirely sure she wants to leave Rocket, in any case.[break][break]
When this world had abandoned her - left her alone to wonder if she would ever be needed, ever be loved - Rocket had filled in the cracks in her heart with purpose. Many were twisted, dangerous individuals, but there were others with far more nuanced reasons for choosing terrorism. jayden cross, Cillian Quinn, Lulu Flint - even Isaac Merlo, once - had adopted her into what felt more like a family than an unfeeling collection of selfish criminals. And, of course, if not for Rocket, would she ever have met parker jones?[break][break]
"I am on Hoenn's side," she answers, finally, with a note of defiance. "I want all of us to survive what's coming. There are cosmic forces beyond our comprehension intent on our destruction."[break][break]
She stares into her empty glass, as if it were some sort of scrying mirror.[break][break]
"Freya can have Sootopolis, if she wants it. Makes no difference to me. I just want to live in the house I own there, with Parker, when this is all said and done."[break][break]
It's a treasonous statement, perhaps. But King won't tell. He has his own problems to worry about.[break][break]
"But none of it will matter if we stand back and let the DRK Triad annihilate our world."

He really just wanted to sit here and serve shitty bear, maybe curl Freya's toes once or twice or a thousand times.

King levels a knowing look at the woman.

"I feel ye, I do. Ye got a lot on yer shoulders, more than I think needed but, ye seem content ta stick it all on till ye bend or break. That said, the DRK Triad as ye call em ain't a concern for yer average Joe. The DRK Triad isn't raisin' protectin' prices around the corner--Team Rocket is.

The DRK Triad also ain't the reason milk is so expensive--again, that's the League and Team Rocket. Ye catch my drift? The DRK Triad is a problem but, fer now, it isn't the problem."

He shakes his head, tired.

"Just heed my words, ye? Freya is stubborn ta a goddamned fault. I don't want ta deal with Parker if ye go and get yerself killed, ye?" Of course, he'd liked the woman, her spunk and fearlessness, but he wasn't the type to say such shit aloud.

It's a simple issue, and yet, so very insurmountable. The average Hoenn citizen will never care about an abstract, existential threat like the DRK Triad, so long as it does not affect their immediate day-to-day lives. Without a mass consensus, what traction will she really make with her mission? She'd assumed the leaders were the people she needed to convince: but who better to sway a government than its people?[break][break]
"I need to make it the problem," she resolves. "One way or another."[break][break]
She chews on it as he imparts his final warning. At the mention of her girlfriend's name, she glances up, meeting his eyes. There's an exhausted grief gnawing at the corners of his mouth, the furrowing of his brow. Like a man refusing to quit on something (someone), even when doing so, more often than not, results in pain.
